Research Administration Profile:

The School of Design comprises about 40 full-time faculty and about 750 students (undergraduate and graduate) in 4 departments: Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Graphic Design, and Design and Technology (includes Industrial Design). Master's degrees are offered in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Graphic Design and Industrial Design. There are three research centers associated with the School: The Center for Universal Design, The Design Research Laboratory and the Community Development Group. Faculty in all departments are involved in funded and unfunded research, some independent of these centers.

Total Research Funding (approximate):

Center for Universal Design clients have included:

National Institute of Disability and Rehabilitation Research, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, The Administration on Developmental Disabilities, the U.S. Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board, and private industry.

The Design Research Laboratory clients have included:

National Forest Service, the National Park Service, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the NC Division of Environmental Management, the Research Triangle Institute, and professional practices, public non-profit agencies and academic departments.

The Community Development Group clients have included:

(in state) the Agricultural Extension Service, the Agricultural Experiment Station, NC Arts Council, Lumbee Regional Development Association, the Coastal Plains Regional Commission, and out of state, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the U.S. Office of Economic Opportunity, the National Institute of Mental Health and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Individual faculty members have benefited from grants from the NEA, the Graham Foundation, the American Institute of Graphic Arts, the Graphic Design Education Association, National Science Foundation, AIA Institute Scholars Program, General Motors Corporation, and others.

North Carolina State University is a land-grant, Research 1 university organized into nine colleges (Agriculture and Life Sciences, Education and Psychology, Engineering, Forest Resources, Humanities and Social Sciences, Management, Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Textiles, and Veterinary Medicine), the School of Design, and the Graduate School. In fall 1994 there were 27,500 students enrolled. The University is located in Raleigh, the state capital, in the region called The Research Triangle (includes Durham with Duke University and the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill).
