Institute for Building Sciences Profile:
The Institute for Building Sciences is the coordinator of all research, service and continuing education activities conducted within the School of Architecture. Integral to the School, but with this special role, the Institute endeavors to foster excellence in faculty and student research, service and education activities that increase knowledge, enhance the built environment, and serve the profession, the local community, the state, and the nation.
Established in 1981, the Institute is staffed by a full-time director and utilizes the School of Architecture's team of support staff for assistance. All day-to-day operational expenses, equipment, and travel are borne by externally funded projects. As a result, the Institute has focussed its efforts on successfully competing for scarce research funds.
The Institute has developed an excellent reputation on a wide spectrum of building-related research projects. Such projects range from the development of low-literacy, self-help construction manuals to a state-of-the-art laboratory for measuring properties of building materials; from curriculum development projects to physical experimentation in large-scale public and industrial facilities; from natural disaster relief and prevention studies to accessibility studies; from post-occupancy evaluations to changing the way buildings are procured, designed, constructed, and operated.
Total Research Funding:
1990-1991 ..................$127,000
1991-1992 ................... 285,543

The School of Architecture was established in 1975 and offers professional and pre-professional programs at the graduate and undergraduate levels. The undergraduate curriculum provides a basic education in architecture and the built environment. The pre-professional program leads to a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies. The professional program confers an accredited Bachelor of Architecture degree. Two graduate degrees are offered. The Master of Architecture program is designed for students with four-year non-accredited degrees in architecture who seek to earn an accredited advanced degree. The Master of Science in Architecture program is designed for students who do not need an accredited advanced degree and wish to specialize in one of the emphasis areas of the School. Research, continuing education, and service in the School is coordinated through the Institute for Building Sciences.
