College Profile:

The College of Architecture and Planning (CAP), established in 1966, consists of three departments: Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Urban Planning. In addition to four- and five-year undergraduate programs in these disciplines, there are four graduate programs leading to a Master degree: Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Historic Preservation, and Urban and Regional Planning. The College also collaborates with the Center for Energy Research, Education, and Service (CERES) in applied research programs.

Several departmental and interdisciplinary programs provide opportunities for educational enrichment, scholarship, and service. For more information please refer to Programs in the CAP web page. Research is an important and expanding component of the College’s mission: funded research opportunities are available for undergraduate students as well as for graduate students and faculty.

Housing Futures Institute

Director: Dr. Stephen Kendall, AIA, CIB

The Housing Futures Institute, founded in 1991 by the late Professor of Architecture Stan Mendelsohn, provides a platform for research and teaching in housing. Authorized as an administrative entity within the College of Architecture and Planning, HFI has benefited from the participation of a number of faculty and graduate students in the College, including Professors Michele Chiuini (past Acting Director), Harry Eggink, Sonny Palmer, Michel Mounayar, Scott Truex, Dave Ferguson, Jeff Hall, Bob Fisher, and Robert Koester, Director of the Center for Energy Research and Service (CERES). Faculty from other Ball State University Departments have also taken active roles.

HFI has received funding support from both the private and public sectors in Indiana for projects designed to advance technology of new housing and to provide opportunities for market stimulation in the housing industry. HFI has also addressed issues of housing for urban households with special emphasis on the elderly. Major funding from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) enabled HFI to complete a comprehensive study of the revitalization of inner city neighborhoods of five Indiana cities.

Future research and teaching from the HFI platform will build on the work done in the past and branch into new areas. One of the critical issues shaping new HFI initiatives is the importance of balancing and distinguishing community, long term values with individual preferences. Housing, to be sustainable and maintain its value, must be both durable and changable. This dual requirement suggests new approaches to the design of new buildings and the refurbishment of the existing building stock. These approaches will involve changes in the regulatory environment, the introduction of new products, the development of new construction processes and new design knowledge.

Also important to the future of HFI work will be an increased recognition of the internationalization of networked professions. In that sense, drawing lessons from local as well as distant housing processes and environments will constitute a major thrust of research and teaching.

Recent Funded Projects of the College of Architecture and Planning:

Housing for Inner City Neighborhoods

In 1999 the Housing Futures Institute has completed a four-year research program funded by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (Housing for Inner City Neighborhoods and Innovative Housing). As a result of the process that has involved a number of communities in five cities of Indiana, housing, neighborhood, and downtown development plans are at various stages of implementation. The final report, completed by interim director Michele Chiuini, is available on request.

Evergreen 2

The Housing Futures Institute has completed in summer 1999 the second stage of a research project funded by the Retirement Research Foundation and other sources through the Evergreen Institute, Bloomington, Indiana. Living environments for the elderly have been investigated with anthropological and architectural criteria developed by an interdisciplinary team. The products are directories of services and resources, educational programs, and a mixed-use housing development.

British Architectural Theory and Design

Prof. Carol Flores received a New Faculty Grant from Ball State University funding travel to London to continue research on nineteenth-century British architectural theory and design. Dr. Flores is preparing a book on the impact of the work of Owen Jones [1809-1874] on architecture and the decorative arts in the nineteenth and twentieth-centuries.

Collaboration in Teaching and Practice

Professor Pamela Harwood has completed a preliminary stage of research on teaching and practice in architecture. Professor Harwood had received a College of Architecture and Planning CORE grant of $ 900 in fall 1998.

Indiana Gas Energy-Efficient House Prototype

A College team designed a prototype for a low-cost, energy-efficient house built in Fishers, Indiana. The design considered a complete range of environmental factors in addition to energy consumption: passive heating and cooling, recycleable materials, and health. Innovative construction technologies were evaluated in relation to these criteria. Two additional prototypes will be developed and built. The research and design development team consists of: Michel Mounayar, Project Director; Jeff Hall, Interim Dean; Robert Koester, Director of CERES; Stephen Kendall, Director of HFI; Michele Chiuini and Harry Eggink. Project funding: Indiana Gas Company, Inc., approximately $ 178,000.

Other Funded Projects

David Schoen, Urban Planning. GIS Implementation, City of Shelbyville, Shelby County. $ 200,791

James Glass, Architecture. Main Street Assistantship Project, Indiana Departrment of Commerce. $ 20,750.
